Engineering support and lifting in the Solent
The short answer
For chief engineers: the hoists and syncrolift around the Solent, and how engineers, service agents and spares are arranged while you are alongside.
For a chief engineer, the Solent offers a concentration of yards and marine trades within a short passage of each other, with lifting capacity for most yachts up to 60 metres.
Lifting
Trafalgar Shipyard in Portsmouth Harbour has a syncrolift for yachts of up to 60 metres, 877 tonnes and 14 metres beam. Endeavour Quay at Gosport lifts yachts of up to 40 metres and 180 tonnes. On the Itchen in Southampton, Saxon Wharf has a 200 tonne hoist and Shamrock Quay a 75 tonne hoist; the Itchen Bridge above them clears 23.0 metres above highest astronomical tide. Berthon at Lymington lifts 75 tonnes to 6.5 metres beam, and Cowes Yacht Haven 50 tonnes.
Engineers and spares
If something fails while you are alongside, we arrange for a marine engineer to diagnose it, and bring in the manufacturer's own authorised service agent where the fault lies with a named piece of equipment. With three days' notice, an engineer and parts are waiting on the quay when you arrive, and spares from abroad are cleared through customs, including for a yacht under Temporary Admission.
Refit under Temporary Admission
Overhaul or refit of a yacht under Temporary Admission needs Inward Processing Relief, which we arrange before work starts.
